Wise Owls has been campaigning on issues relating to Over 50s since its inception over 13 years ago. We were key voices in the campaign for and the development of the Age Discrimination Law.  We were part of the pressure groups demanding the postponement of the timetable to the pension age of women. We exposed the Ageism in the public sector shown on Panorama.

However we must not stop there. Ageism remains rife and our campaigning has never been more important.

Wise Owls have recently expanded into Europe. Through our leadership of the Pan European Older People's Learning and Employment (PEOPLE) network and for older people generally though our membership of AGE platform Europe and UK we are taking your issues and joining an increasingly large voice speaking up for the older worker. Help us in the fight against Age Discrimination.

In the current economic, political and social climate we believe that it is time for our generation and for us as Wise Owlers to stand up and be counted in support of social and economic justice, fairness and equity and to defend basic civil liberties.

This has meant Wise Owls starting up and supporting campaigns to get decision makers, employers and the media/public to understand the equal opportunities legislation relating to age, the employer benefits of an age diverse staff, to counter myths and to ask for employment justice - like our current age equality impact assessment campaign and last years FOI public sector employers audit of staff by age.

 Our campaigns:

    1. Support full employment, liveable wage and combat exclusion for seniors and all groups of the workforce.

  • Promoting Age Diversity (PAD) Campaign - which seeks to persuade the media, public, employers and those affected by ageism of the contribution of older and younger workers and the benefits all can bring to the country, to business and the need to stop the practice of ageism. This includes the development of a charter of equal rights for all ages. To persuade employers from all sectors to appreciate the benefits of age diversity including older and younger workers, for their businesses, profitability and to meet the legal requirements. To educate and remind funding bodies and decision makers of legal requirements relating to age equality and employment, the current lack of equality of treatment and funding for older workers and why this needs to be re-dressed immediately.

  • Our Age Equality Impact Assessment Campaign seeks to highlight the ageism of the current cuts. How are the cuts affecting older people? Are the cuts unfairly affecting the Over 50s in the workplace? Currently older people are most likely to be made redundant. Least likely to get recruited and least likely to find reemployment. We know this because of research we conducted looking into Ageism in the public sector. It has to stop! This is a cross party campaign to persuade government, local government, public bodies and political representatives to apply age and employment equality in practice including monitoring numbers and percentages of workers and learners by age group (under 25, 25 – 49, 50+) and addressing these inequalities by government action.

This tax on the financial sector has the power to raise hundreds of billions every year globally. It could give a vital boost to the NHS, our schools, and the fight against child poverty in the UK – as well as tackling poverty and climate change around the world.

Not complicated. Just brilliant.

We are both disabled as well as being disability activists. We experience pain and suffering ourselves and see it in our friends, families and colleagues. It is one thing to live with the physical challenges of a disability. It is quite another to hear lies and misinformation every day from our own government.
