The Age Equality Impact Assessments Campaign seeks to highlight ageism taking place with the current cuts. Currently older people are most likely to be made redundant. Least likely to get recruited and least likely to find reemployment. We know this because of research we conducted looking into Ageism in the public sector. It has to stop! We want people to support our campaign for the government to carry out proper Age Equality Impact Assessments as part of their responsibility to carry out Equality Impact Assessments in relation to all their programs and cuts

This is a cross party campaign to persuade government, local government, public bodies and political representatives to apply age and employment equality in practice including monitoring numbers and percentages of workers and learners by age group. The age groups we recommend are under 25, 25 – 49, 50+. The results and any inequalities must then be met by government action.

The campaign asks:

  • How are the cuts affecting older people?
  • Are the cuts unfairly affecting Over 50s?
  • Are older workers being unfairly targetted in the work place?
  • Why are the government not monitoring redundancies, recruitment or reemployment by age?

Current activity:

Wise Owls conducted a research project using the Freedom of Information Act to find out if Ageism was taking place in County and London Borough Councils? The report Ageism in the public sector made national news appearing in Panorama and in newspapers and on radio throughout the country.

What you can do:

  • Send a Freedom of Information letter to your local council asking for details of redundancies and recruitment by age.
  • Keep and eye on what is closing in your area and find out what age groups are affected by it.
  • Send us the Information and we will publish it.
  • Start a discussion on our forum
  • Spread the word

Together we can bring about change!
